South Chicago Dance Theatre celebrates its 5th anniversary season with 5 new commissions by several accomplished choreographers to create new works for the company’s Harris Theater debut, “An Evening with the South Chicago Dance Theatre: Celebrating Five Years” on Friday, May 20, 2022. The choreographers include SCDT Founder and Executive Artistic Director Kia S. Smith and guests Ron De Jesus, longtime Chicago dancer and choreographer; Stephanie Martinez, founder and artistic director of PARA.MAR Dance Theatre; Crystal Michelle Perkins, associate artistic director of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company; and Wade Schaaf, founder and artistic director of Chicago Repertory Ballet. In the pursuit of diversity and equity, this evening of dance hopes to illuminate perspectives of the human experience through the lens of black and brown choreographic voices while celebrating SCDT’s first five years of existence.
