Former Chicagoan and internationally renowned dance artist Bill Shannon returns to the Windy City to perform his hour-long semi-autobiographical solo work, Maker Moves. Clad with his arsenal of modified crutches and a skateboard, Shannon attempts his most virtuosic feats, exploring the essential role that trial-and-error plays in creative innovation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bill Shannon (he, him) is an interdisciplinary artist and maker who explores body-centric work through video installation, sculpture, linguistics, sociology, choreography, dance, and politics. Shannon has been awarded a United States Artist Award in Dance, a Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography, a Foundation For Contemporary Art Fellowship in Performance Art, and has worked as a choreographer and performer for Cirque Du Soleil. Bill’s contributions to dance include a very specific movement vocabulary evolved through his creative use of crutches as a child after the discovery of a physical disability that effected his ability to bear weight in his hips. His subsequent immersion in the emergent youth cultures of hip-hop and skateboarding further contributed to his autodidactic form on crutches. The result of this fusion was a singular style of mobility, performance art, and dance that required multiple new designs and fabrications of modified crutches to sustain technical advances in his movement practices. Bill continues to enjoy facilitating workshops and classes while also attending underground dance events and pulling off the occasional impromptu street performance.
Location Details:
Located at 1306 S. Michigan Ave., just blocks from the Field Museum Campus and Lake Shore Drive, the Dance Center is in the South Loop, one block south of the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue. The Roosevelt train stop (Red, Orange and Green lines) is three blocks west, and many CTA buses service the area.
Public Transportation
The Dance Center is close to two major train stops: the Red Line at Roosevelt and State, and the Orange and Green Lines at Roosevelt and Wabash. If you are traveling from the South Side, the Metra line offers a good option with a full service stop at the Roosevelt Road Station.
Various buses service the area and include #1, #3, #4, #12 and part time service from bus #129.
Parking
Park on the west side of Michigan Avenue between 13th & 14th Streets, or on the west side of Wabash Avenue at 14th Street. Street parking is metered and limited. Tow zones are enforced. Please allow ample time for parking or take public transportation when coming to a Dance Center performance.
