Who’s Blacker, Maya Angelou or Harriet Tubman? What about Kanye West or Barack Obama?
Chicago artist Kenyatta Forbes has found a novel way to explore these questions with her incisive and playful card game, Trading Races. Featured in the Chicago Tribune, VICE News, and NPR, players are dealt five cards featuring famous figures and compete to convince one another that they hold the “Blackest” card.
With each ensuing hand, players dig deeper into the dynamics and complexities of race–Blackness in particular. At CHF, Forbes will join Ashlyn Sparrow, Learning Technology Director at The University of Chicago’s Game Changer Chicago Design Lab, to discuss how she created the game–and facilitate a few rounds. Come prepared to play cards, have fun, and participate in difficult but important conversations.
